Although hip-hop's mainstream focus has always leaned hard on the coasts
- from East to West and to the South - Detroit has always maintained a very
strong, singular voice in the hip-hop landscape.
Detroit's urban music history formed rigid roots in the lineage of
Motown, reached up through the meteoric rise of Eminem and is maintained through
the wellspring of artists connected to the J Dilla/Slum Village
continuum.
In 2013, as much of "hip-hop" borderlines on parodic, pop-leaning
vapidity, the Motor City is responsible for some of the purest, rawest boom-bap
around.
This night is dedicated to the Motor City sound and will feature music
from across the spectrum of Detroit Hip-Hop: from Eminem to Slum Village to
Guilty Simpson, Black Milk, Phat Kat, Royce Da 5'9 and via J Dilla's vast
library of solo releases & collaborations with other crews, this will be an
evening for the head nods.
